At approximately 8:15 p.m. on Monday, June 17, repairs were completed at our Clairton Plant following a small electrical fire that occurred early Monday morning. At this time, normal operations have resumed and we have successfully restored the desulfurization process.

Allegheny County Health Department reported that a regional meteorological inversion occurred this morning. Hourly data collected from Department’s Liberty Borough ambient air monitor recorded a sulfur dioxide level of 82 parts per billion for the 3:00 AM hour on March 28th. The national standard for sulfur dioxide is 75 parts per billion. There have been no further exceedances.

This was the first recorded hourly exceedance in the Mon Valley since Jan. 8. Our investigation has not identified anything in our operations that led to elevated sulfur dioxide emissions from Edgar Thomson during this time.
Read moreOn the morning of February 4, a light oil leak was discovered at a pipeline on the grounds of the Clairton Plant. The light oil leak was accumulated on the soil. It did not reach any drains and did not escape the property. Maintenance crews immediately began working to repair the leak, taking all actions to minimize soil contact. We immediately contained the leak. No employees were injured and there was no risk to nearby communities.
